This plate by Antoine Sonrel (1819-1879) appeared in: Harris T. W. 1862. A Treatise on some of the Insects of New England which are injurious to Vegetation. A new edition. New York, Orange Judd and Company. i–xi, 1–640, pl. 1–8.
In the book, the introduction states this is an engraving, but Sonrel was a lithographer and close inspection of this plate appears to be a lithograph.
My background primarily centers around herpetology. Early on I worked with captive amphibians and reptiles, then did field work for a few years. Eventually my love of books and art mingled with my love of animals and I began selling herpetological books. My fascination with natural history illustrations really took off when I started collecting and selling rare books. Many natural history books published before about 1900 contain wonderful natural history illustrations. These illustrations have been used for all sorts of purposes ever since.
